24th August 2012 – The ideal stage for the sprinters arrived the fifth day with a singular route: 21 kilometers to be run 8 times in the small city of Logroño. Javier Chacón, escaped at the starting line, seemed able to win or maybe he thought he could win but the group let him go till the last lap and then they caught him. Obviously all the sprinters teams were in front of the group but the fastest was the German rider of Team Argos Shimano: John Degenkolb won and was followed by Daniele Bennati and Gianni Meersman. The general classification and the jerseys didn’t change that day. The stage after, not a plain but an up and down one, saw the victory of the leader of this Vuelta: Joaquim Rodriguez – Katusha, expert in making surprises on climbing arrivals. Second place for Chris Froome – Team Sky who has the very same position even in the points classification and Alejandro Valverde – Movistar, ex red jersey who’s trying to gain ground!
